Desmond Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist combat medic, was a real life hero at "Hacksaw Ridge". Desmond became the first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service as an unarmed medic in WWII. He was credited with saving the lives of 75 fellow soldiers during the battle of Okinawa.

After all he did to rescue his friends, Desmond's leg was badly injured by a grenade. Even then he wanted to save his fellow soldiers. Desmond refused to allow medics to put themselves in danger to render him assistance.  He dressed his own wounds and waited another 5 hours for rescue.

As he was being carried to safety on a stretcher Desmond saw another more badly injured soldier. He insisted the men carrying him put him off the stretcher and carry the more seriously injured soldier to safety. As a result Desmond was hit by the enemy and injured yet again. This time his arm was shattered. He then took a broken stock from a rifle and made a splint for his arm and crawled some 300 yards, over rough terrain, to a medical aid station. All of this after rescuing 75 men under enemy fire, with no weapon, atop a 400 foot cliff, with only one protection. He was protected by God.
